This Rudall Carte was made in 1926 by Henri Schumacher, widely regarded as the finest flutemaker of his generation. It is in excellent condition and we have given it a service ready for sale.
Henri Schumacher was born in Strasbourg in 1859, the son of an instrument maker. He trained in Paris and came to London in the 1880s to work at Rudall Carte, where he established himself as the top maker, responsible for the very finest flutes. This example from near the end of his career shows all the skill and eye for detail one associates with him, along with that combination of elegance and solidity.
This flute is in excellent condition. The wood of body and foot is unblemished. Padding is old but still works well. The silver-lined headjoint features an ebonite lip-plate, which gives good articulation. There is an old repair to a crack away from the embouchure hole, not affecting playing. We have serviced the flute ready for sale.
The flute comes in its original case, with a receipt for when the flute was sold second-hand by Rudall Carte in 1950. This is a fine open G sharp instrument that plays with a warm rich sound. And with such a beautifully-made mechanism it feels solid and easy under the fingers.
