This lovely flute was made by John Simpson, who operated at this address from 1830-1869. His flutes are beautifully made to the highest standards. This example has recently undergone a complete overhaul by Hammy Hamilton and is in good playing order.
The keys are original and undamaged, as are the blocks. During the overhaul, cracks to the headjoint (away from the embouchure hole), barrel, and lower body were repaired and have proved stable. All parts of the flute are stamped SIMPSON apart from the barrel which is unmarked and we believe original, since John Simpson did not always mark his barrels. The flute plays nicely at modern pitch A=440. The medium-sized tone holes give a warm and full sound, with a particularly strong low D.
