We are delighted to present this superb Rudall Carte, which has been the subject of a complete restoration.

When new this was one of the finest flutes to emerge from the best flutemaker in the world. Over the course of several months we have remade the mechanism, making repairs where necessary, fitting the keywork to either new or original Carte silver tube, making new steel rods as required, and completing the job with a complete refit and repad. The result is a Rudall Carte that plays like new.

The flute was made by Eugene Goulliere, a great craftsman born in Paris in 1845. He trained and worked in his home city until persuaded by Richard Carte to come to London in the 1880s. He quickly established himself as one of the top makers, and he was responsible for flutes played by some of the top players of the period. He died in London in 1918.

This mechanism features Goulliere's elegant touchpieces and trademark 'scroll' clutches. The wood is in excellent condition. Everything has been done to restore this flute to as-new playing order, so it feels secure and immediately responsive under the fingers, so the owner can enjoy making music with complete confidence.

This is our fourth Rudall Carte restoration. Each takes a lot of work as all the mechanism has to be completely taken apart, the old solder removed, any faults or old repairs addressed, the dozens of parts prepared, and then all put back together with new strong solder. The previous restorations are now being enjoyed by owners in the USA, Japan, and France.

The flute comes with a superb original Rudall Carte headjoint, silver-lined and without crack or blemish. The embouchure hole is as crisp as when it was made. It plays beautifully and brings the flute to life with a wide range of colours and dynamics.

You can also add a new Haswell Signature Headjoint at a discount price of £1,500, including tenon collar, as pictured.
