The mellow character of boxwood is complemented by the silver lip insert, which subtley brings a crispness that does not intrude on the quality of sound. Our latest S3 cut retains enough resistance to draw out the player, who is able to develop a unique relationship with the headjoint, which plays with a wide dynamic range, lots of colours, and an evenness of tone from bottom to top. It seems to work particularly well on silver flutes, where it really comes to life, and also looks right.

We do not usually make headjoints in boxwood because of the difficulty of obtaining suitable billets of high enough quality. This piece of box is superb, with the silver fittings emphasising the wood's rich natural grain.
